After seeing a news item that highlighted a "busy weekend" for local police, I ended up doing some research into local crime statistics. I'm not sure why it was busier than usual recently. I began looking into the statistics to see if I could answer that question. Turns out the statistics didn't help me there... but they did inspire an interest in the statistics themselves. To try and find stats on daily incidents, I looked into the crime statistics published on their website. I looked at the two most recent monthly stats ( Oct and Sep ) as well as the most recent year end summary ( 2021 ) and didn't find any way to see a summary of incidents per day. Having looked for this information, I ended up seeing what I would think is the obvious "dashboard overview" part of their crime statistics... the last column of the year end summary report which compares the current year to the average of the past five years. I was in a conversation recently where we were talking about an experience many of us have of being in a social situation where someone talks long beyond what is considered normal in a casual social situation. My own view of situations like this is that it is unproductive to interrupt the person when they are doing this because what they are demonstrating is that they have a strong need to be listened to. Not everyone agrees with me on this, and after the conversation I felt a bit unclear about it... but I strongly believe that there is a better way of dealing with this situation than to simply interrupt the person and stop what they are doing, so I consulted the material I trust about it. The other night I was out at a social event and was in a discussion that triggered something in me that resulted in me getting frustrated. Thankfully I managed to recover from it, but this morning it has me reviewing some things in my resource library to help keep me clear about how to deal with such situations. I'm going back over a yoga reference I have in my library and realizing that it's not about yoga specifically, but about all "mindfulness" practices. It's a CBC Tapestry podcast, a series that I find a lot of very well thought out and useful stuff from, so I took this one quite seriously. In the introduction, it says "What was once a spiritual teaching about wisdom and compassion and reducing suffering in the world has been collapsed into a relaxation technique. The focus on ethics and morality is missing from a lot of forms of modern mindfulness." Revisiting this has shown me that it is about exactly the same thing that I focus on in all the conversations I enjoy having with people... the study of ethics and morality and how those things are missing from people's lives. My need to analyze things in deep detail has a lot to do with growing up a social outcast and developing an identity necessary to survive in that situation. Talking with others has helped me recognize this same kind of problem from a perspective I didn't personally experience. I've been learning about people who grew up being very physically active and how that became their identity... but then changes to their body later in life eroded that identity and created psychological problems. For people having this experience, the challenge was learning how to feel socially equal again with a body that can't do the things it used to be able to do. Their identity was tied to their body's previous ability and now needs to be reprogrammed to match their new physical state.
