When Empathy Goes Both Ways

When Empathy Goes Both Ways Rethinking Autism and Social Difficulty Through the “Double Empathy Problem” For much of the past century, autism has been framed as a condition defined by social deficits - particularly a reduced ability to understand other people. This view shaped everything from clinical diagnosis to public perception. But a growing body of research is challenging that assumption. Instead of a one-sided deficit, scientists are now describing social difficulty in autism as a two-way problem of mutual misunderstanding . This idea is known as the double empathy problem , and it is reshaping how researchers - and increasingly clinicians - understand human connection. A Shift in Perspective The traditional model of autism suggested that autistic individuals struggle with empathy: reading emotions, interpreting social cues, and responding appropriately. The double empathy framework turns that idea on its head. It proposes that when two people have different ways of processing t...

Clarity

"There have been studies that suggest that eating ground up beard hair can halt dementia in mice. Bad news for mice, as surely the last thing you want when you're being used in a drug experiment and will eventually be thrown into a bin... is clarity." - Frankie Boyle, The Unbelievable Truth, Season 22 Episode 3

Purpose & Meaning

Image
This weekend I came across three things that are interconnected which relate to the thing I am most focused on finding a solution to. 1. The New York Times released a piece about how science is showing that there is a significant change in the concept of happiness… a “ collapse ” of it in people at the beginning of their lives. One of the key causes mentioned was  a lack of purpose and meaning . The Global Happiness Curve Is Collapsing. What Does That Mean? https://www.youtube.com/shorts/P4Hdjk82NTE 2. The developer of Dialectical Behavioural Therapy ( DBT ) says that a crucial part of it is helping people find “ a life worth living ”.  Again… purpose and meaning . DBT & A Life Worth Living | MARSHA LINEHAN https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75CEcfcoUrU 3. A top practitioner of DBT,  Dr Peter Fonagy , says “ Personality disorders aren’t genetic, they are created by early childhood interactions. ” This means that it is created by a person’s environment in early chi...

Why Religion Helps People

Why Religion Helps People Some people are good at thinking deeply about life. They can figure out their own ideas about right and wrong, and what makes life meaningful. But most people don’t have the time, energy, or training to do that all on their own. That’s where religion comes in. For a long time—thousands of years—people got married, raised families, and went to church. These habits didn’t happen by accident. They helped people live better, more stable lives. Religion gave them rules to live by, a sense of purpose, and a feeling of being part of something bigger. Some thinkers believe that if we get rid of religion, many people will feel lost. Without something to believe in or something to guide them, people might feel empty or confused. That’s called nihilism—the idea that nothing matters. When that happens, people often turn to things like drugs, unhealthy habits, or angry politics to fill the gap. There are two big ideas about what to do next. One says we should go back to re...

The conditions required for solving problems

Image
Preventing PLANE CRASHES - Neil DeGrasse Tyson https://www.youtube.com/shorts/5tsJpksSUvo This is a real life example that demonstrates how it can be possible to address an issue if the motivation to do so exists. The solution to any problem is... "Every single failure gets thoroughly investigated." I used ChatGPT to help me understand why the US travel industry got this kind of attention while other even larger problems in that same society have not. "The U.S. improved airline safety by investigating all incidents, focusing on reducing absolute fatalities instead of percentages. This approach contrasts with systemic issues like poverty, which cause higher death rates but lack similar attention due to complexity, visibility, and economic incentives driving prioritization of industries like aviation over broader social challenges." ______________________ RELATED GroupThink https://cory-dean-smith-journal.blogspot.com/2025/04/groupthink.html

Now this is a sense of purpose

Image
Out of necessity because of the first snow of the year, I decided to spend 15 minutes shoveling the basic walkway of my side of the apartment building. This is partly selfish because I myself benefit from it, but it's an opportunity for me take a few more moments because I'm the one with the shovel in hand and I'm up early and have the effort to give to it, to do more than just the path to my own car.  It also happens to be way better than any exercise activity because not only do I get what my body needs in terms of physical activity, the work being done is useful to others in a very practical way. I'm not trying to paint myself as a saint. It happens to be a personal tool to escape the other stressful things in my life right now because it's something that I know how to do and no I can succeed at in a measurable time frame. It feels so good to do this. It's just an additional benefit that I can accomplish something that is useful to more than just myself at th...

Tongan Castaways

Image
The Tongan castaways were a group of six Tongan teenage boys who shipwrecked on the uninhabited island of Ê»Ata in 1965 and lived there for 15 months until their rescue. The boys ran away from their boarding school on the island of Tongatapu, stealing a boat in their escape. After a storm wrecked the boat, they drifted to the abandoned, remote island of Ê»Ata and managed to keep themselves in good order for the duration under the circumstances. Long thought dead, they were discovered and rescued in September 1966 by Australian lobster fisher Peter Warner. -  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tongan_castaways The real-life Lord of the Flies kids | Rutger Bregman and Andrew Yang | Yang Speaks - YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9XYB8tHAsSA The real-life 'Lord of the Flies' | 7.30 - YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDz-331V-pY The real Lord of the Flies: what happened when six boys were shipwrecked for 15 months - YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DYebOCCoTYM

The trees ahead and bushes beside you Are not lost. Wherever you are is called Here, And you must treat it as a powerful stranger, Must ask permission to know it and be known. The forest breathes. Listen. It answers, I have made this place around you. If you leave it, you may come back again, saying Here. No two trees are the same to Raven. No two branches are the same to Wren. James Acaster Talks About His Teenage Existential Crisis

James Acaster discusses his teenage existential crisis resulting from a car accident, causing him to question the meaning of life and become suicidal. Raised Christian but no longer practicing, he sought guidance from a vicar who failed to acknowledge the weight of the situation. After reading a handbook on CBT and speaking with a counselor, James learned to reframe his perspective and find comfort in spending time with loved ones. He also speaks about his parents' approach to Christianity, presented as faith rather than forced, and how his father, a science teacher, taught them about evolution.
