When Empathy Goes Both Ways

When Empathy Goes Both Ways Rethinking Autism and Social Difficulty Through the “Double Empathy Problem” For much of the past century, autism has been framed as a condition defined by social deficits - particularly a reduced ability to understand other people. This view shaped everything from clinical diagnosis to public perception. But a growing body of research is challenging that assumption. Instead of a one-sided deficit, scientists are now describing social difficulty in autism as a two-way problem of mutual misunderstanding . This idea is known as the double empathy problem , and it is reshaping how researchers - and increasingly clinicians - understand human connection. A Shift in Perspective The traditional model of autism suggested that autistic individuals struggle with empathy: reading emotions, interpreting social cues, and responding appropriately. The double empathy framework turns that idea on its head. It proposes that when two people have different ways of processing t...

Why It's Impossible To Manufacture In America

Image
I found an interesting and topical project that one of my favorite YouTubers did. It took him four years to complete it and the result was posted a few days ago. His channel is so popular that another YouTuber already created a commentary on it. Together these two videos work well together... the commentary one is a shorter analysis of the project and the original video is more like a more detailed but distilled video journal of it. The project was to experiment with whether it's possible to do what the current US government is trying to accomplish right now... to have an independant, self-sustaining domestic economy. According to this four year experiment, the answer is a clear no. That answer is likely to change the nature of the question... is that goal the right one to pursue at all? Now this is a sense of purpose

Image
Out of necessity because of the first snow of the year, I decided to spend 15 minutes shoveling the basic walkway of my side of the apartment building. This is partly selfish because I myself benefit from it, but it's an opportunity for me take a few more moments because I'm the one with the shovel in hand and I'm up early and have the effort to give to it, to do more than just the path to my own car.  It also happens to be way better than any exercise activity because not only do I get what my body needs in terms of physical activity, the work being done is useful to others in a very practical way. I'm not trying to paint myself as a saint. It happens to be a personal tool to escape the other stressful things in my life right now because it's something that I know how to do and no I can succeed at in a measurable time frame. It feels so good to do this. It's just an additional benefit that I can accomplish something that is useful to more than just myself at th...

Intelligence is Relative

To me, this is an important piece of information about how to survive life itself in a more general way. Before I saw this reference, I generally believed that intelligence was about absolute knowledge of things... but according to this it's more about a tedious process of trial and error until a reasonable answer is found. This implies that it's only possible to understand things "relatively" rather than "absolutely" because the results achieved through this process are approximations that are dependant on the tools and methods we use to obtain them. The "Sideways" Effect

1. "As of 2017, Pinot Noir production in California had increased about 170%, a phenomena dubbed "The Sideways Effect." The movie may also have temporarily suppressed sales of Merlot. Merlot sales dropped around 2% between the movie's release in 2004 and 2008, while Pinot sales during that period rose 16%." -  https://wine.lovetoknow.com/ wiki/Sideways_-_the_Movie 2.
