I was in a conversation recently where we were talking about an experience many of us have of being in a social situation where someone talks long beyond what is considered normal in a casual social situation. My own view of situations like this is that it is unproductive to interrupt the person when they are doing this because what they are demonstrating is that they have a strong need to be listened to. Not everyone agrees with me on this, and after the conversation I felt a bit unclear about it... but I strongly believe that there is a better way of dealing with this situation than to simply interrupt the person and stop what they are doing, so I consulted the material I trust about it. I found an item which helps me stay clear about why I am motivated to find a better solution to this problem. BigEagle (@mr.rezguy80) | TikTok , https://www.tiktok.com/@mr.rezguy80 ) The creator of it talks about his experience working on drilling rigs and the advice he got on how to survive that environment due to the fact that there are people in it who clearly have serious problems. He refers to them as "racist motherfuckers". The people he's talking about are psychologically disturbed. They are broken people. They are biased people. They are angry people. They are harmful people. However, the bottom line is they are people... and they are able to exist because we don't have an effective way to deal with them. I have been one of these people... and still am in many ways. People like this don't know how to take care of themselves... let alone understand how to treat others. The other night I was out at a social event and was in a discussion that triggered something in me that resulted in me getting frustrated. Thankfully I managed to recover from it, but this morning it has me reviewing some things in my resource library to help keep me clear about how to deal with such situations. A Jordan Peterson video called Truth was shared with me in an online discussion and the quote below is from that video. In my view, life itself is one big dilemma and therefore I view every conversation about Morals & Ethics to be about learning how to deal with dilemmas. For example, the Ectopic pregnancy situation put forth in the video as an example of a moral dilemma is only a dilemma because of our belief that we are able to do something about it.
