Moral Dilemmas
What Are Moral Dilemmas?
The comment I have about this video is that I find the topic of "moral dilemma" a bit deceiving because it suggests that it is possible for the opposite to exist... the absence of moral dilemmas. In my view, life itself is one big dilemma and therefore I view every conversation about Morals & Ethics to be about learning how to deal with dilemmas.
For example, the Ectopic pregnancy situation put forth in the video as an example of a moral dilemma is only a dilemma because of our belief that we are able to do something about it. Ectopic pregnancies would have existed in the past when we didn't understand them enough to be able to do anything about them, yet under those "natural" circumstances we wouldn't have called the outcome immoral in any way. We would view it as tragic, but morality wouldn't enter into the picture at all.
The only reason the word "dilemma" enters into the picture is when we believe we have some choice and control over things. Choice and control is an ongoing process where we will continually find new ways to have more of it.
If we were to take the same view about the morality of such things... that when nature makes the choice we accept it as natural (tragic, but natural)... then we must accept that human beings are a natural part of nature and therefore anything done by humans is also natural. Why should a tragedy caused directly by nature be more acceptable than a tragedy caused indirectly by something that nature created... humans beings.
The point of discussing morals as a general topic is to be able to observe the differing morals of others and use that to learn and reflect on ourselves. Sometimes we learn there are flaws in the morals of others and therefore to avoid those things. Sometimes we learn there are flaws in our own morals and therefore learn to change them. The goal is to learn how to generally improve the concept of morality for everyone.
An obvious goal of such a discussion is to get closer to the root causes of problems. I found an article in my Real Love library that talks about the concept of morality which adds to the discussion.
