Why It's Impossible To Manufacture In America

Image
I found an interesting and topical project that one of my favorite YouTubers did. It took him four years to complete it and the result was posted a few days ago. His channel is so popular that another YouTuber already created a commentary on it. Together these two videos work well together... the commentary one is a shorter analysis of the project and the original video is more like a more detailed but distilled video journal of it. The project was to experiment with whether it's possible to do what the current US government is trying to accomplish right now... to have an independant, self-sustaining domestic economy. According to this four year experiment, the answer is a clear no. That answer is likely to change the nature of the question... is that goal the right one to pursue at all? Purpose & Meaning

Image
This weekend I came across three things that are interconnected which relate to the thing I am most focused on finding a solution to. 1. The New York Times released a piece about how science is showing that there is a significant change in the concept of happiness… a “ collapse ” of it in people at the beginning of their lives. One of the key causes mentioned was  a lack of purpose and meaning . The Global Happiness Curve Is Collapsing. What Does That Mean? https://www.youtube.com/shorts/P4Hdjk82NTE 2. The developer of Dialectical Behavioural Therapy ( DBT ) says that a crucial part of it is helping people find “ a life worth living ”.  Again… purpose and meaning . DBT & A Life Worth Living | MARSHA LINEHAN https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75CEcfcoUrU 3. A top practitioner of DBT,  Dr Peter Fonagy , says “ Personality disorders aren’t genetic, they are created by early childhood interactions. ” This means that it is created by a person’s environment in early chi...

Why Religion Helps People

Why Religion Helps People Some people are good at thinking deeply about life. They can figure out their own ideas about right and wrong, and what makes life meaningful. But most people don’t have the time, energy, or training to do that all on their own. That’s where religion comes in. For a long time—thousands of years—people got married, raised families, and went to church. These habits didn’t happen by accident. They helped people live better, more stable lives. Religion gave them rules to live by, a sense of purpose, and a feeling of being part of something bigger. Some thinkers believe that if we get rid of religion, many people will feel lost. Without something to believe in or something to guide them, people might feel empty or confused. That’s called nihilism—the idea that nothing matters. When that happens, people often turn to things like drugs, unhealthy habits, or angry politics to fill the gap. There are two big ideas about what to do next. One says we should go back to re...

Groupthink

Previously I was inspired when I learned that air travel safety changed significantly at some point because the goal switched from keeping accidents under a certain percentage to keeping them under a fixed absolute number. For example, if their goal is to keep accidents no higher than 2%, it means that as the number of flights increases, so does the number of allowable accidents. With a fixed number of accidents as a goal instead of a percentage, as the number of flights increases, the percentage of accidents goes down... meaning that the quality control system must learn what it takes to accomplish this... which is done by guaranteeing the allocation of the resources needed to diagnose and correct problems. In the past the only opportunity I've had to see under the hood of this is when a big accident happens and eventually the results of the investigation are released to the media. I recently found a youtube channel that is dedicated to looking closer at the everyday details of h...

Forced Joy

I don't understand what planet the media and the subjects of this phenomenon are from that they consider this to be news. In my experience, all of Western Culture has been operating on an unofficial "Forced Joy" principle my entire life. All that's different here is the companies are now making it official... so at least it's not a secret-in-plain-sight any more. :-) ‘Forced Joy’ is a miserable corporate trend - The Business Times https://www.businesstimes.com.sg/opinion-features/forced-joy-miserable-corporate-trend Beth Kowitt: In an age when workers are finding it hard to raise a smile, Starbucks’ ‘forced joy’ could be the most miserable corporate trend ever | Irish Independent https://www.independent.ie/opinion/comment/beth-kowitt-in-an-age-when-workers-are-finding-it-hard-to-raise-a-smile-starbucks-forced-joy-could-be-the-most-miserable-corporate-trend-ever/a1540125666.html Comment: ‘Forced joy’ is alienating employees and customers | HeraldNet.com https://www...

The conditions required for solving problems

Image
Preventing PLANE CRASHES - Neil DeGrasse Tyson https://www.youtube.com/shorts/5tsJpksSUvo This is a real life example that demonstrates how it can be possible to address an issue if the motivation to do so exists. The solution to any problem is... "Every single failure gets thoroughly investigated." I used ChatGPT to help me understand why the US travel industry got this kind of attention while other even larger problems in that same society have not. "The U.S. improved airline safety by investigating all incidents, focusing on reducing absolute fatalities instead of percentages. This approach contrasts with systemic issues like poverty, which cause higher death rates but lack similar attention due to complexity, visibility, and economic incentives driving prioritization of industries like aviation over broader social challenges." ______________________ RELATED GroupThink https://cory-dean-smith-journal.blogspot.com/2025/04/groupthink.html
