Comment about "Canadian singer who quit drinking calls for booze-free options at music venues"

I listened to an interview with a musician who has made the choice to go alcohol-free.

I think this is a story worth paying attention to because the musician has expressed the way that alcohol is used in their industry. They said that, unlike the general use of alcohol... as a way to relax AFTER something stressful (ie. after a hard day's work)... the music industry's use of it is to reduce anxiety BEFORE doing something. It is one of the few working environments where this is not only accepted, but commonplace and even necessary.

What I got out of this story is the idea that things like alcohol do serve a purpose, at least temporarily.

What I would have liked to hear from this interviewee is the details of how and why they came to not need this tool anymore, because within the same interview they said something contradictory. They began the story by saying that when they first became a musician, their anxiety was so high that it resulted in vomiting... and that when introduced to alcohol as a way to deal with that, it was an immediate relief of the problem. This implies that the use of alcohol was extremely useful.

Later on in the interview, they expressed that it felt amazing to STOP using alchohol... but there was no context given for this apparent total reversal of attitude... only the sentiment that it felt amazing paired with the encouragement to others in the industry to consider trying it.

I will attempt to fill in the missing information here. I suggest that the benefits of the alcohol were no longer needed because with time and experience the anxiety of performing is replaced with confidence... but an occupational hazard is socializing with others who haven't acquired this benefit yet, and it's normal to continue a behaviour even when it's no longer necessary because of mirroring behaviour. The entire interview is essentially a story of how an individual's experience can be influenced by their environment due to a need to share their story as a method to change their own behaviour. If they were able to operate separately from their environment, they wouldn't need to do this... they would simply change when it makes sense to do so. Individual behaviour is socially interconnected and therefore can require the same interconnectedness to change... at least from the individual's point of view (whether it is actually necessary or not is irrelevant... from the individual's point of view, it is).
